On January 19, 2008, the fourth annual Walk for Life will take place in San Francisco, Ca. Thousands of people will peacefully march to show their support for the pro-life cause. This is an amazing event, and anyone who wants to show their support to end abortion in America is encouraged to attend!
I attended the walk in 2006. There were an estimated 15,000 people, and yet it was very quiet and peaceful. Many of us were praying, whether formulated prayers, such as the rosary or the Divine Office, or spontaneous prayers, which were some of the most uplifting. There were people from many different denominations, and while mostly Christian, I did see a few non-Christians as well. I was able to see an older lady who appeared to be in her eighties or so, to small infants, and everyone in between. It was amazing to see so many people peacefully demonstrating.
There was of course a counter protest on the sides of the street. To warn people who are thinking of going, there were some pretty vulgar things said. But at those times is when I noticed the most people around me praying, instead of responding to their insults!
The route starts with various speakers at Justin Herman Plaza on Market Street. It then proceeds down the street past the various piers, ending at Marina Greens. Over 25,000 people are expected. Even though I do not enjoy being in large crowds, I had no problems last time, and actually felt quite at east.
The speakers include:
Dr. Alveda King, of the Martin Luther King family.
Gianna Genson, an abortion survivor.
Rev. Clenard Childress, protestant minister and Director of LEARN.
Jesse Romero, an awesome radio host, heard locally on Immaculate heart radio and EWTN.
Fr. Frank Pavone, Director of Priests for Life and founder of Missionaries of the Gospel of Life.
And if you are interested, there will be a special mass celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral at 8:00am.
If you are in the area, and are interested in going, let me know! People can go as groups, or individuals. I attended with my parish in '06, but I already know of a few of my friends reading this who might like to go, so just send me a note or call. And for those of you who have never met me, check out the website, or keep an ear out in your local community for news as it gets closer to January.
Have a good evening everyone and God bless.
